I went to Murraya Dental Centre after discovering a dark spot on one of my molars that I couldn't brush away. The next appointment I was offered was two days later with Dr Stern. That fit well because it was him who I got recommended by friends.

The following day, I called Murraya, in pain, inquiring if they had any cancellations, as my bleeding filling-less cavity was hurting and I couldn't do much. They put Dr. Stern on the phone, who told me: "I am looking at your X-ray right now, and I don't think you should be in any pain. I don't think this is urgent." After insisting, he grudgingly agreed to do the filling that day.

Since I have no dental insurance I asked what costs I could expect. I was told the special exam cost would be $47 plus $24 for x-rays which seemed fair to me.

Everyone was very friendly and took their time with me. Still, in the end Dr Stern didn't want to charge me anything for my visit at the dentist. I would be fine if he did, since he spent his time with me. But he just told me I'm fine and can come back for a checkup if I like to. :)

I'm wondering about these reviews posted by Joel Fransen. Go to a lot of dentists??? These one line reviews for numerous Whitehorse dentists don't "ring true" I would have appreciated some authentic dentist reviews here.

After a preliminary examination, two X-rays, and Dr. John Stern pressuring me into getting a full mouth X-ray as well (for another potential procedure unrelated to the bleeding molar, so I refused), he told me the problem was not urgent enough, that he didn't have time for me that day, and that one of the secretaries would schedule a later appointment. They told me the earliest he could see me was weeks later and shooed me out the door. And BAM, Murraya just made close to 200$ for a useless examination. Other clinics in town, by the way, charge 65$ for exam + X-ray and are much more competent and friendly.

For not more than 30 minutes of his time for an exam and filling, I ended up being charged $420. Soon afterwards, the filling Dr. Stern did began to crack, and I am now pretty much back where I started, with a sore tooth where food gets painfully stuck in the crack and I can't chew most of the time - a very poorly executed filling.

On my appointment I arrived 15 minutes early but didn't have to wait. I filled out two forms and was shortly after asked to sit in the examination chair. An assistant asked me where my cavity was so she could do the x-rays. When she looked at it, she asked Dr Stern to have a look and tell her if he needs an x-ray for it. Dr Stern came over and told me my "cavity" was only a black stain that can occur on this spot and that my teeth look perfectly healthy.

I went in, and Dr. Stern rushed through the whole filling procedure. He didn't seem to care, was distracted, and simultaneously working on other patients, doing my filling during idle time. At the end, he tried to sell me a more complicated and expensive procedure that I would need to have done on some other teeth another time. I quote: "Well, there's no rush. If you get a better job and have insurance, come see me and we'll take care of that."

I looked for an emergency dentist in Whitehorse when a years-old filling fell out, and the gap in the molar started to hurt and bleed. I had to leave the city in a couple of days, so I hoped it could get fixed before my departure. I walked into Murraya and was told they could see me and fix the problem that day. I thought it was my lucky day.
